I N S T A G R A M vanessajcuthbert
Since graduating from the Royal College of Art with a distinction, I have worked as a senior lecturer at Manchester School of Art and Liverpool John Moores University whilst continuing my creative practice as part of my research. I continue to exhibit internationally, winning several awards for my work and I am now a full-time working artist.
I have a studio/gallery in Manchester, where I am based. I work across a range of disciplines including painting, printmaking, and film.
My themes are wide and varied and are underpinned by creative risk taking and experimentation.
I often paint from memory, using my experiences of landscapes, interactions with people, and reflective observational drawings. My approach to painting translates well into print making in small runs. I use colour as a central element in my work, editing intuitively on the canvas, or manipulating silk screens in layers, often working intuitively. My current collection of prints engage with gestural drawing and earthy block colours which have a sense of movement and spontaneity. My recent paintings, the 'Still Life Series' draws on discarded objects, discovered in junk shops and found on walls during the lockdown. These have also evolved into small editions of silk screen prints. Both prints and paintings use a simplified language and strong colour within a contemporary space, underpinned by a strong sense of design. My visual language is usually underpinned by abstraction and this translates well to my work with monoprinting. I mainly use high pigment paint to enhance the minimalist approach, and to emphasise the impact of the relationships between areas of colour, which I find is intriguing. I strive to create a shorthand visual language that is selective and decisive.
